Own Your Feed, Your Store, Your Paywall And Your List

Managed podcast and media hosting on a VPS we own and operate in the United States — including the mail servers your list sends from.

The Short Answer

Self-hosted podcast hosting means your audio files and your RSS feed live on a server you control, rather than on a platform that can remove your show. We run managed Castopod on a fully managed VPS starting at $59/month on annual billing, with the back catalogue offloaded to archive storage and your email list sending from our own SMTP infrastructure. It suits established shows doing roughly 100,000 downloads a month or more, or anyone already paying separately for a podcast host and a website host.

What Self-Hosting Actually Protects You From

It protects your feed and your back catalogue

If your media host removes your show, the audio and the RSS feed go with it — every directory pulls from that feed. Running Castopod on your own VPS means the feed is yours, the files are yours, and no one else can switch it off.

It does not keep you on Spotify or Apple

Directory removal is the risk most shows actually fear, and self-hosting does nothing about it. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. What self-hosting does is make directory removal survivable instead of fatal, because the feed and the audience still exist.

Your email list is the part nothing can take

This is the real insurance, and it is the cheapest thing on this page. A list you own reaches your audience after any removal event, from any platform.

Be clear-eyed about this, because most pitches in this space are not. Self-hosting solves some deplatforming risk and none of the rest.

We Own The Mail Servers, Not Just The Web Servers

Your list is the asset that survives every removal event. It is worth knowing who actually runs the machines it sends from.

Managed Castopod, Not A Server You Have To Run

We install and maintain Castopod for you

Castopod is open-source podcast software with its own RSS feed, on-premises analytics and built-in support for paid subscriber-only episodes. We install it, configure the cron job, keep PHP and the database patched, and support it. Everything it needs is native to the cPanel stack we already run.

Analytics that stay on your server

Castopod calculates download and listener statistics on the machine your show runs on, so your audience data is not being processed by a third party to build a profile.

Recent episodes on the VPS, back catalogue on archive storage

Podcast downloads are heavily front-loaded, so recent episodes account for nearly all the bandwidth. Those stay on fast VPS storage. The back catalogue and any video archive move to object storage at roughly $8 per terabyte per month, cached behind Cloudflare so old episodes cost you almost nothing until someone rediscovers them.

Most podcasters do not want a server, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. We install it, we run it, and you never touch a command line.

The Money Is In The Store And The Paywall

Hosting is the anchor. For an established show, merchandise and memberships are usually the larger revenue line, and both are things you can own outright.

Where Live Streaming Fits, Honestly

Live video is not a managed VPS product

Live transcoding consumes roughly a CPU core per output stream and a lot of bandwidth, and the software involved runs outside the managed cPanel stack. We will not pretend a managed VPS is the right home for it.

What we do instead

Keep streaming to the platform your audience is on. We host the origin, the recorded archive, the members area and the website. Where you genuinely need your own live infrastructure, that is dedicated hardware or a project build, priced as such.

Video archives are a storage problem, and that one we solve

A three-year weekly video archive is a few hundred gigabytes with very little egress — exactly the shape object storage is good at. That is the piece that usually breaks a creator’s current setup.

What It Costs

Priced so you can work out the monthly before you talk to anyone.

Independent Media & Creators FAQs

Honestly, no. Below roughly 100,000 downloads a month a per-download podcast host is cheaper and simpler, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a VPS. If you are starting out, take the website and the email list from us and keep your current media host.

No. We install Castopod, configure it, patch it and support it. You get a web interface to publish episodes. Root and SSH access are there if you want them, but nothing about the product requires you to use them.

We do. Liberation Campaign runs on our own SMTP servers and our own software, so there is no third-party relay whose acceptable use policy could override ours. Most platforms cannot say that, because the mail they sell is somebody else’s.

No, and anyone who says otherwise is selling you something. Directories make their own decisions. What self-hosting changes is that removal from a directory no longer costs you your feed, your archive or your audience.

A 45 to 60 minute episode at 128kbps is roughly 50MB, so 6TB of monthly transfer covers on the order of 120,000 downloads, and the next tier up roughly 200,000. Audio bandwidth is rarely the constraint — storage usually bites first.

Yes. The feed URL is redirected so every directory follows it, the back catalogue is migrated, and we check subscriber counts on both sides before and after. This is the step that goes wrong when it is done cheaply.
