What an SEO tool can and cannot tell you
SEO tools are good at measurement and bad at judgement. They will tell you your page titles are duplicated, your site is slow, you have broken links, and a competitor ranks for something you do not. All of that is useful. What no tool can tell you is which of those findings is worth your time — and that is the whole difficulty.
The second problem is the scoring. Most tools produce a number out of a hundred which is a composite of things with wildly different value, so chasing it leads people to fix forty trivial warnings while leaving the two issues that actually affect visibility: usually page speed and a site structure search engines cannot follow. A score of 70 with the right things fixed beats a 95 achieved by tidying alternative text.
What actually tends to move the needle for a small business is unglamorous. Pages that load quickly on a phone. One clear page per thing you sell, rather than one page mentioning everything. Page titles that say what the page is. An accurate Google Business Profile with consistent name, address and telephone details, which matters enormously for local search and has nothing to do with your website at all. And content that answers the questions customers actually ask.
Be wary of two specific traps. Changing URLs without redirects, which throws away rankings you already have — the most common self-inflicted injury in this field, and it usually happens during a redesign. And publishing pages built around a keyword rather than around a reader, which is a strategy search engines have spent a decade getting better at recognizing.
