A Documented Record Of Who Cut Off The Firearms Industry
GoDaddy — removed AR15.com, January 2021
GoDaddy publicly confirmed it told AR15.com, then the largest firearms forum online, to take its domain elsewhere. Losing a registrar takes your website, your store and your email down at the same moment.
PayPal — firearms and ammunition prohibited
PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy names ammunition, firearms, and certain firearm parts and accessories among the transactions it does not allow. Many dealers only discover this when funds are held.
Stripe — firearms listed as restricted
Stripe’s published restricted-business list covers rifles, shotguns and pistols, plus regulated parts and accessories including suppressors. Restricted means conditional and revocable.
Intuit — thousands of merchant accounts closed
Intuit closed firearms merchant accounts en masse and reversed the policy only in September 2023, following a U.S. Senate Commerce Committee investigation. The businesses affected got no transition period.
Shopify — removed firearms sellers in 2018
Shopify updated its acceptable-use terms and removed sellers in the firearms category. A hosted store platform can change its terms and take your storefront with it.

What an FFL should ask a host that a normal retailer does not
Start with the records. Your bound book and your completed 4473s are your responsibility, not your vendor’s, and the federal retention rules have been the subject of active rulemaking rather than sitting still. That argues for keeping your own copies, in a place you control, rather than leaning on a platform you would have to ask for an export. Whatever the period settles at, the record has to be findable years from now.
Be clear with any provider about what your site actually does. Most FFL sites are catalogue and lead generation, with the transfer itself happening in person through a licensee. That is a very different risk conversation from shipping a firearm to a customer, and getting it stated plainly up front avoids an account review later when someone skims your product pages and guesses.
Payment is usually the harder half. The large processors list firearms and ammunition as restricted or prohibited business, and a store can be approved, trade for months, then be reviewed and dropped with the balance held. Ask who your processor is, ask what their published policy says about your category, and have a second option identified before you need it.
