Web design is the part of a website that visitors judge in about the time it takes to read a headline: what you do, whether you look trustworthy and how to reach you. LiberationTek offers web design two ways. Our development team builds fully custom designs, or you can build it yourself with a drag-and-drop builder. Both run on our own U.S.-based network, so the site you design is not rented back to you.
This page explains how each route works, what good website design looks like for a small business, what to prepare before you start, and the mistakes that cost the most time and money.

Every web design project has the same core: a clear message, a layout that guides people to one action and pages that work on every screen. The difference between our two routes is who does the building.
The right path depends on budget, time and how unusual your needs are.
If you start with the builder and outgrow it, our developers can take over rather than making you start again somewhere else. That is one reason we offer both under one roof: the choice you make today does not lock you in.
Custom website design is a service for owners who want a site shaped around the business instead of the other way around. It starts with consulting, because most expensive mistakes happen before the first page is drawn. From there our team designs around your audience and goals, and our web design services cover the whole process. Features available through our custom work include:
Prefer not to manage the site afterward? We offer managed services for hosting, e-commerce and websites. Pricing for custom web design depends on scope, and we send a clear quote before work begins. Our post on web design for business goes deeper on what to expect.
If you have more time than budget, Site Builder lets you start from a template or a blank canvas. You can add forms, booking, blogs, e-commerce and multiple languages without code, though some of those features belong to higher plan tiers, so check the plan you want. There is a responsive preview so you can check how pages look on small screens, and an AI text writer and AI website generator for first drafts. Browse the website templates to see the starting points, or read build it yourself or hire a developer if you are not sure which option fits.
There is no universal answer, but a few questions usually settle it.
You want to control the edits yourself, your needs are fairly standard (services, about, contact, maybe a blog or a small store) and you would rather spend time than money.
You need a specific integration, memberships, fundraising, a layout that does not fit a template, or you simply do not want to build the site yourself.
You want to launch fast and revisit later. A builder site is a reasonable first version, and a rebuild can follow when the business has outgrown it.
If you are unsure, ask us. We will say plainly which route fits, including when the lower-cost one is the better choice.
One more point on the decision: time is a cost too. A do-it-yourself web design project is cheap in dollars but can take many evenings, and a site that stays half finished helps nobody. A custom web design project costs more up front but hands the work to people who do it every week. Be honest about which resource you are shorter on.
Whether you use our web design services or build on your own, the project goes faster when you arrive with a few things settled. None of these needs to be perfect.
What you do, for whom, and where. If you cannot say it in a sentence, the home page will not say it either.
Call, request a quote, book, buy or donate. Pick one for the home page.
Most small business sites need a home page, services, about and contact. Start there.
Photos of your work or team, a few honest descriptions and any reviews you have permission to use.
Know who holds the domain registration and current hosting account before anything moves.
They tell a designer more than a paragraph of adjectives.
Web design and SEO are linked. Clear headings, fast pages, a mobile layout and honest page titles help both visitors and search engines. After launch, our SEO tool will audit the site and give you a prioritized list of fixes. Strong website design and clear structure make that job easier. Our post on how to get your website on Google covers the basics of getting a new site noticed.
Web design and SEO work best when they are planned together rather than patched together. Headings should describe the content that follows. Each page should have its own topic and its own title. Images need descriptive text. Menus should use plain words rather than clever ones. These are design decisions as much as technical ones, and they are cheaper to get right in the first draft than to repair later.
Good web design also means thinking about what happens after the click. A phone number should be tappable. A contact form should confirm that it was sent. A booking or purchase path should have as few steps as the task allows. Walk through your own site as a stranger would, on a phone, and write down every spot where you hesitate. Those hesitations are your design to-do list.
An accessible site is easier for everyone to use: readable text, enough contrast between text and background, buttons you can tap on a phone, and pages that can be used with a keyboard. If you serve a public entity, see our ADA Title II website compliance page, and our post on small business accessibility. For general background on the topic, the W3C offers an introduction to web accessibility.
Whatever route you take, a few things decide whether a site earns its keep. Say what you do in the first sentence on the home page. Put your phone number and a contact button where people can find them without scrolling. Keep menus short. Use real photos where you can. Make sure text is readable on a phone, since many visitors will never see the desktop version. Check that forms work and that you actually receive the messages.
It also helps to decide early who maintains the site. A beautiful design that nobody can update goes stale within a year. With Site Builder you can edit pages yourself. With a custom build we can train your team or manage updates for you. Our guide to web page design has more on layout and structure.
Most problems we see are not about taste. They are about priorities, and they are easy to avoid once you know them.
Your visitors are not you. Write for the person who has never heard of your company.
Five buttons of equal weight on the home page means none of them gets clicked.
A layout that looks great on a wide monitor can be unreadable on a small screen.
Oversized photos slow every page. Resize them before you upload.
Real photos of your people and work build more trust than generic ones.
Hours, prices, staff and services change. A site that is out of date quietly costs you customers.
A website redesign is worth considering when the site is hard to use on a phone, the look no longer matches the business, updates are painful or you have changed what you sell. If your current site is on another builder, we can transfer your website content from most site builder platforms. That is a good time for a redesign, since you are already rebuilding pages. A redesign is also the moment to fix speed, structure and search basics instead of carrying old problems forward. See our migration services for how moves are handled, and our guide to testing performance before you start.
If you are weighing a website redesign against a fresh start, the question is whether the existing content and structure are worth keeping. Often the pages that earn visits are worth preserving, even when the look needs to change. Tell us which pages bring inquiries today and we will plan around them, so the new website design does not discard what already works.
Web design cost depends mainly on scope: the number of pages, how custom the layout is, how many integrations you need and whether the site sells products or takes memberships. Site Builder is the lower-cost route, with hosting, SSL and a free domain included in annual plans. For custom work, we quote after a free consultation and send a clear quote before any work begins. Ask for the quote in writing, with the scope spelled out, so the web design cost you agree to is the one you pay. Whoever you ask, compare quotes on what is included: hosting, content help, revisions, training and what happens after launch.
Tell us what you need. Book a call, or pick a template and begin in Site Builder.
Design and build. For custom projects we propose a plan and quote, then design and build. Our team can also transfer your content from most site builder platforms.
Launch and improve. We can host, secure and manage the site, and you can track results with Liberation Analytics.
A site is never really finished. After launch, review what visitors actually do, fix what confuses them and keep the content current. That habit matters more than any single web design decision, and it applies equally to a builder site and to custom website design. If you want a partner for the ongoing part, say so when you contact us, and we will quote web design and upkeep together.
It depends on scope. Custom design and development projects are quoted after a free consultation, and we send a clear quote before any work begins. Site Builder is the lower-cost route, with hosting, SSL and a free domain included in annual plans. See the Site Builder page for current plan pricing and what each plan includes.
Choose Site Builder if you want to control the work yourself, you are comfortable learning as you go and your needs are fairly standard. Choose custom design if you need specific integrations, a unique look, memberships, fundraising or complex e-commerce. If you outgrow the builder, our development team can take over.
Site Builder sites run on our own U.S.-based network, with hosting, SSL and a free domain included in annual plans. For custom projects we can also host and manage the site, or discuss other options with you during the free consultation.
Yes. We can rebuild or redesign an existing site and transfer content from most site builder platforms. A redesign is also a good moment to fix speed, mobile layout and search basics. Tell us what you have now, what is not working and what you would like it to do, and we will recommend a sensible path.
We build with search basics in mind, such as clear structure and mobile layouts. Our separate SEO tool can then audit the finished site and give a prioritized task list. We do not promise specific rankings, since search engines decide those.
