Proton says it does not log IP addresses by default, but in 2021 Swiss authorities compelled it to start logging the IP address of a French activist’s account, and Proton then updated its policy to say it can be legally required to do so in a Swiss criminal investigation. Proton’s founder said the company “must comply with Swiss law.” This is not unique to Proton: every email provider, including LiberationTek, has to answer lawful orders in the country where it operates. The practical question is which country’s courts you would rather be under, and who answers the phone when you need help. Liberation Email is hosted, supported and legally based in the United States.
