Short answer: DigitalOcean sells raw compute. A Droplet gives you root access and makes you the system administrator — patching, hardening, backups and a control panel are yours to buy and run. LiberationTek sells the finished server: a fully managed VPS on hardware we own in the United States, with a cPanel/WHM license, daily backups, free migration and U.S.-based support included in the plan price.
A 16 GB Droplet lists at $96 a month; add cPanel, daily backups and a support plan with a real response target and the same server passes $200. LiberationTek’s Growth VPS — 8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 350 GB NVMe, 10 TB bandwidth — is $99 a month on an annual term with all of that already in it. Prices checked September 11, 2026.
A Droplet is a fast way to get a server. It is not a finished hosting service. If you want a DigitalOcean alternative, start by listing the jobs a server needs done every month.
Patching, firewall rules, backups, a control panel and someone to call all cost money or time. A fair DigitalOcean alternative puts those jobs in the plan price.
These questions help you compare any DigitalOcean alternative, ours included.
A useful DigitalOcean alternative answers yes to the first four and no to the last. On our own page the Growth VPS has 8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 350 GB NVMe and 10 TB bandwidth.
The list price of a 16 GB Droplet is $96 a month. The chart shows what sits on top of it for a comparable setup.
Add them up and the monthly total is $202.79. Our Growth VPS is $99 a month on an annual term, with all of it already in the plan. Prices checked September 2026.
If you have an engineer who enjoys running Linux servers and you need custom cloud services, DigitalOcean can be the better fit. We suggest a DigitalOcean alternative when you want the server finished and managed for you.
Migration is free with LiberationTek and included for up to 5 sites on the Growth plan. Your DigitalOcean server keeps running while we copy the sites across, so you can test before you switch.
Servers run on hardware we own in the United States. For general guidance on keeping a server secure and updated, see NIST small business cybersecurity resources.

The best DigitalOcean alternative is one where the sum on the invoice matches the sum on the plan page. Pick a DigitalOcean alternative that adds nothing at checkout.
We handle the move so you can keep working.
“I have had a great time working with the team at Liberation getting set up to migrate my servers over from DigitalOcean and AWS. And the best part is I know I am not going to be unexpectedly shut down because of some opinionated TOS nonsense.”

A Droplet is unmanaged. Kernel updates, firewall rules, PHP versions, mail configuration and the 2 a.m. recovery are your job. Every Liberation VPS plan is fully managed — we patch the OS, maintain cPanel at a stable version and monitor the hardware around the clock.
DigitalOcean's free Starter support is email only with a response target under 24 hours. Faster help is a separate subscription: $24 a month for under 8 hours, $99 for 24/7 live chat, $999 for under 30 minutes. Ticket and chat support is included on every Liberation plan, with phone from Growth up.
A Droplet hands you a bare operating system. A cPanel/WHM license for up to 30 accounts is $53.99 a month direct from cPanel. Liberation bundles the full cPanel/WHM license into every VPS plan at no extra cost.
DigitalOcean charges 20% of the Droplet price for weekly backups or 30% for daily. On a $96 Droplet that is $28.80 a month for daily copies. Liberation includes daily automated backups with 50 GB to 500 GB of backup storage depending on plan.
Outbound transfer above a Droplet's allowance is billed at $0.01 per GiB, so a traffic spike shows up on the invoice. Liberation VPS plans include 6 TB to 32 TB of bandwidth and we never bill egress or overage fees.
Your sites run on servers Liberation owns and operates in the United States — not leased capacity, never outsourced, never subject to foreign data-sharing laws. We do not track, sell or share your data or your activity.

Liberation can transfer your website content from most site builder platforms.
Match your Droplet's vCPU and RAM to a Liberation VPS plan, or tell us the workload and we will size it for you. Every plan is fully managed and ships with a cPanel/WHM license.
Send us access to your Droplet or a snapshot. We move sites, databases, users, cron jobs, SSL certificates and mail across for you — free on every plan, 1 to 30 sites depending on the plan.
Your sites run on the new server at a temporary address while the Droplet keeps serving live traffic. You review everything before a single visitor is affected.
We update DNS, reissue SSL through AutoSSL and watch the first 48 hours. Once you are happy, destroy the Droplet and stop paying for it.
No. A Droplet gives you root access to a virtual server and you administer it: operating system updates, firewall, web server, PHP, mail, backups and recovery. DigitalOcean’s paid support plans help with the platform itself, not with running your applications. LiberationTek VPS plans are fully managed — we patch the operating system, keep cPanel at a stable version, monitor hardware and uptime 24/7, and pick up the phone.
The Droplet price is only the start. A 16 GB / 8 vCPU Droplet lists at $96 a month. A cPanel/WHM license for up to 30 accounts is $53.99, daily backups add 30% of the Droplet price ($28.80), and a support plan with a response target under 8 hours is $24. That is $202.79 a month before any bandwidth overage. LiberationTek’s Growth VPS — 8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 350 GB NVMe and 10 TB of bandwidth — is $99 a month on an annual term with all of it included. Prices checked September 11, 2026.
Yes, and the migration is free. Give us access to the Droplet or a snapshot and we move sites, databases, users, cron jobs, SSL certificates and mail. Foundation includes one site, Growth five, Commerce fifteen and Scale thirty. Everything is staged at a temporary address first, so your Droplet keeps serving live traffic until you approve the cutover.
Yes. Root and SSH access are included on every LiberationTek VPS plan, so you can install and configure what you need. The difference is that you are not alone with it — when something breaks, we are the ones who fix it, and that is already in the price.
No. LiberationTek VPS plans include 6 TB to 32 TB of bandwidth depending on the plan, and we do not bill egress or overage fees. DigitalOcean bills outbound transfer above a Droplet’s allowance at $0.01 per GiB, so a traffic spike or a large download turns into an invoice line.
No. Droplets ship with a bare operating system and no control panel. You can install cPanel yourself, but the license is bought separately — $53.99 a month for up to 30 accounts at cPanel’s published prices — and keeping it patched is your responsibility. Every LiberationTek VPS plan includes a cPanel/WHM license and we maintain it for you.
Then an unmanaged provider will be cheaper, and we will tell you so. LiberationTek VPS is priced for businesses that need the server genuinely managed — patched, monitored, backed up and supported by a person who answers. If you only need raw compute and you enjoy running Linux yourself, DigitalOcean is a reasonable place to stay.

A droplet is genuinely inexpensive, and that figure is the one everybody compares. It is also the smallest part of what a running website costs. The droplet price buys a virtual machine and keeps the hardware alive. It does not include patching, it does not include monitoring, it does not include a backup you have tested restoring, and it does not include anybody to call.
Add those in honestly and the comparison changes. Automatic backups are a percentage on top. Monitoring that alerts a human requires a human. Patching is either an hour of somebody’s month or an unpatched server. When people say managed hosting costs more than a droplet, they are usually comparing a complete service with an incomplete one.
The backup point deserves specifics, because it is the most common misunderstanding in this category. A snapshot is a copy of an entire droplet, restorable to another droplet in the same account. It is not portable to another provider, and you cannot pull a single deleted file out of it. If snapshots are your backup strategy you have a disaster recovery plan and no file recovery plan — and the second is the one you will actually need.
None of this is an argument against DigitalOcean, which does exactly what it says it does. It is an argument for being clear about what you are buying. If you have the skills and the habit, an unmanaged droplet is excellent value. If the honest answer is that nobody is currently patching the server, the cheap droplet is the expensive option.
Where we fit: managed WordPress hosting if you want the website to be somebody else’s problem, or a managed VPS if you want root access with patching, monitoring and tested backups included. Support is based in the United States. Website Migration is included with hosting, email and Hub plans. If you are not on a plan, or you want a one-off move, it is $250. Book a call and we will audit what is actually running on your droplet first.
