Proton says it does not log IP addresses by default, but in 2021 Swiss authorities compelled it to start logging the IP address of a French activist’s account, and Proton then updated its policy to say it can be legally required to do so in a Swiss criminal investigation. Proton’s founder said the company “must comply with Swiss law.” This is not unique to Proton: every email provider, including LiberationTek, has to answer lawful orders in the country where it operates. The practical question is which country’s courts you would rather be under, and who answers the phone when you need help. Liberation Email is hosted, supported and legally based in the United States.
Proton has said it is moving parts of its infrastructure out of Switzerland because of a proposed Swiss surveillance law. Liberation Email is hosted in the United States on servers LiberationTek owns and operates.

Updated September 11, 2026. Proton Mail prices, limits and Bridge availability are from Proton’s pricing page and business plans page, checked September 2026. Proton’s infrastructure move was reported by TechRadar. The 2021 IP-logging case was reported by TechCrunch and Engadget. Annual totals are list-price math before taxes; prices change, so confirm before buying.
Most comparisons in this category are unfair to Proton, because they score it on features it deliberately does not have. Proton’s design choice is that the provider cannot read your mail, and nearly everything people find awkward about it follows from that one decision rather than from neglect. Judge it on whether that trade suits your business, not on a feature grid.
What the trade costs you is standard access. Because the mail is encrypted with keys only your client holds, there is no ordinary IMAP endpoint — so connecting an arbitrary mail client, a help desk, a CRM or an accounting tool is either impossible or routed through their desktop bridge on one machine. If your workflow depends on software reading your mailbox, that is the constraint to test before anything else.
What it costs you on the way out is the same thing in reverse: migrating away is hands-on rather than server-to-server, through their export tool or the bridge. Worth knowing in advance, not because it should stop you choosing Proton, but because “easy to leave” is a reasonable thing to want from any provider and this is the one place it is genuinely harder.
So the question is what you are actually protecting against. If your concern is that a provider’s staff could read your mail, Proton addresses that and conventional providers do not. If your concern is the far more common one — a mailbox compromised by a reused password, mail that lands in spam, no way to recover a departed employee’s account — then encryption at rest is not the control that helps, and strong authentication, proper SPF, DKIM and DMARC records and real administrative control are.
Where we fit: Hub For Teams gives you mailboxes, shared calendars and contacts on your own domain, with standard protocols so your other software can actually connect and authentication records published properly. Hosting is in the United States on servers we own, pricing is flat and published, and support is based in the United States where you can reach a person by telephone. If end-to-end encryption is a requirement of your business rather than a preference, we will tell you to stay on Proton. Book a call and we will work out which it is.
